UPI to Get Smarter: Soon Your Devices Can Make Payments on Their Own

India’s popular real-time digital payment system, UPI (Unified Payments Interface), is all set for a smart upgrade. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which manages UPI, is working on an Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled version of the system. This means that in the near future, your smart devices could make payments automatically — without needing your direct input every time.

Imagine this: your smartwatch pays for your metro ride as soon as you enter the station, your car settles parking fees as you leave the lot, or your smart fridge reorders and pays for milk when it runs out. Even subscription services on your smart TV could renew on their own — all powered by UPI.

According to insiders, the goal is to make digital payments even more seamless and automated, especially as smart appliances and connected devices become more common in Indian households and businesses. This move also supports India’s push toward a more cashless and digitally advanced economy.

The IoT-ready UPI would be secure, reliable, and designed to work across a wide range of devices — from home appliances and wearables to vehicles and beyond. It could also support recurring payments, microtransactions, and one-time authorizations for added convenience.

This new version of UPI is still in development, but once launched, it could open up a whole new world of smart, automatic, and effortless payments — taking India’s digital payment ecosystem to the next level.
