FASTag’s Validity Period and how to check it?

With the increasing emphasis on cashless transactions in India, FASTag has emerged as an essential tool for seamless travel across toll plazas. These small, RFID-enabled tags are affixed to a vehicle's windshield and allow toll payments to be made automatically (without the need for physical cash or waiting in long queues). But just like any other electronic product, FASTags come with their own validity period. Understanding how long a FASTag lasts and how to check its validity is a major feature of uninterrupted travel. So, let’s break it down for you.

What is the Validity Period of a FASTag?

The validity of a FASTag is typically 5 years from the date of issuance. This timeframe is consistent across all providers, including major banks like ICICI, HDFC, SBI, and others. However, during this five-year period, users need to maintain sufficient balance in their FASTag wallets to continue availing the benefits.

Even though the FASTag itself is valid for five years, the balance in the linked account must be kept active and replenished as needed. Failing to do so can result in an inactive FASTag. The five-year validity applies only to the RFID tag and not the balance or recharge status, which must be monitored separately.

How to Check the Validity of Your FASTag

There are multiple ways to check the validity of your FASTag, depending on the issuing bank or service provider. The following are some of the most common methods you can use:

Via the FASTag Issuer’s Website or Mobile App

Every FASTag issuer provides an online portal or mobile app for users. Simply log in to your account and navigate to the ‘FASTag’ or ‘Vehicle Details’ section. It’s the place where you will find all relevant information.

Using the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) Portal

The NHAI portal is another convenient option to check your FASTag status. Visit NHAI’s FASTag portal, enter your vehicle registration number or FASTag ID, and view your FASTag details – including its expiration date and balance.

    Through SMS Alerts

Upon registering for a FASTag, you’ll start receiving transaction alerts, including recharge confirmations and low-balance notifications, via SMS. These messages also occasionally include reminders about the validity period. Keep an eye on these SMS updates for any alerts regarding your FASTag status.

    Customer Care Helpline

If you prefer a more personalized approach, you can always contact the customer service helpline of your FASTag issuer. By providing your vehicle registration number or FASTag ID, the support executive can confirm your tag’s validity and other details.

What Happens When Your FASTag Expires?

Once your FASTag has reached the end of its five-year validity period, it must be replaced. You can get a new FASTag from the same issuer or switch to a different bank or provider as per your liking. The old FASTag will need to be deactivated, and any remaining balance can be transferred to your new FASTag account. Always make sure to confirm this process with your issuer to avoid any slipups.

Keep your FASTag in check to avoid unexpected hiccups at toll plazas. A quick balance and validity check through the available channels can save you time and stress on the road. Your FASTag's five-year lifespan means it'll outlast most of your vehicle's parts, but it still needs attention. Make it a habit to glance at its expiry date occasionally, just as you would your license or insurance. A valid FASTag is your passport to smoother travels, so keep it current and cruise on.
