In a bold move blending conversational AI with real-time payments, OpenAI has partnered with India’s National Payments Corporation (NPCI) and fintech firm Razorpay to pilot “Agentic Payments” inside ChatGPT.
According to the announcement, users will soon be able to browse products, confirm a purchase, and complete the UPI payment—all without leaving the chat interface.
Axis Bank and Airtel Payments Bank have signed on as banking partners for this pilot, while Tata Group–owned BigBasket is among the first e-commerce platforms to be integrated.
In one example shared, a user could ask ChatGPT to “help me order ingredients for a Thai vegetable curry for 4 people from BigBasket,” and the AI would present options, calculate costs, and, with user approval, place the order via Razorpay’s payments backend.
The initiative remains in pilot stage. The partners say they will closely monitor issues of security, user consent, reversals, and control, ensuring users retain oversight of every transaction. While no wide rollout timeline has been disclosed, success in this test could mark a significant step toward conversational commerce in India.
Separately, NPCI is also moving ahead with biometric authentication for UPI payments—allowing fingerprint or facial recognition as alternatives to PIN entry.
