Between the financial year 2014–15 and December 2024, over 63,000 cases of digital payment fraud have been reported in India, according to official government data. These cases were recorded by commercial banks and financial institutions across the country under the category of "Card / Internet and Digital Payments" — and involved transaction amounts of Rs 1 lakh or more.
In total, there were 63,315 fraud cases reported in this category over nearly ten years. The financial impact has been significant, with a total loss of Rs 733.26 crore attributed to these frauds during the period.
This data highlights the growing risks associated with digital payments, especially as online transactions become more common in everyday life. While digital platforms have made payments more convenient and faster, they’ve also created new opportunities for cybercriminals.
