The Indian government has introduced several initiatives to promote UPI adoption in underdeveloped regions. The Digital India campaign aims to make digital services accessible to everyone, regardless of their location. UPI is a basis of this program, connecting rural populations to the formal banking system.
One major initiative is the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), which encourages opening bank accounts. These accounts often link to UPI, enabling seamless transactions. The government has also partnered with payment platforms to run awareness campaigns in regional languages, making digital payments easy to understand.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) have introduced incentives for merchants and customers who use UPI. Zero Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) policies encourage shopkeepers to accept UPI payments without worrying about extra costs.
